Google’s Conversion Optimizer
If you use Adwords, Google has an excellent tool, it’s conversion optimizer. This tool will optimize your adwords campaign in order to bring you the most bang for your buck. You must have Adwords conversion tracking, and must have at least 200 conversions in the past 30 days to use this tool, but if you meet those criteria, it is well worth your time to look into Google’s conversion optimizer.
In short, the conversion optimizer tracks your conversions, and optimizes your Adwords campaign to run most efficiently. Instead of focusing on clicks, it focuses on conversions. What makes this a particularly powerful tool is that it uses information you do not have access to (but Google does). It can take into account the search terms, location of the searcher, the site or network your search was performed on, and many other factors. Using all of this information, plus the amount you are willing to pay per conversion, it optimizes your ads to show in a manner to provide you with a better return on your investing dollar.
Don’t be confused on this issue, you are not paying per conversion. You do enter a maximum you want to pay per conversion, but there is not a guaranteed conversion ratio. You still pay per click using this conversion optimizer, but those clicks are now targeted clicks. That is a huge benefit as opposed to just throwing a huge advertising net out. It’s like fishing, if you have a fish finder on your boat, you’re going to catch more fish. Google’s conversion optimizer is like a fish finder for whatever you happen to be selling.
Another benefit is that Google’s conversion optimizer is updated in real time, so you don’t need to adjust your bid per click, it will do it for you. Additionally, it will work on both the search and content networks. In the content networks it will place your ad in the best place for conversions. In the search network, it will adjust your bid per click and show your ad for the searches that will return the best conversions. It’s like having a full time Adwords manager personalizing your campaign to run as efficiently as possible. And it’s free.
The only downside to this tool is that it will not work with some Adword features. Some of these features include the budget optimizer, position preference, placement targeting and preferred cost bidding. I don’t really see much downside to not being able to use these features, however, as the conversion optimizer tool should be able to replace and out-perform them. Give it a whirl if you meet the conversion criteria, I think you will be very happy with the results.
