Looking to make money blogging or hosting a website?  Google’s AdSense is a great tool to help you monetize your website or blog.  If you are not already familiar with AdSense, I would suggest looking into it today.  In a nutshell, you place ads for Google on your site, when people visit your site and click on the ads, you make money.  It is a great way to make money, you don’t have to ask for donations from your readers or visitors, you don’t have to sell anything, you just offer targeted websites for them to visit.

That is the beauty of AdSense, the sites that you show on your site are targeted to your audience.  The sites will be helpful to your visitors.  The more visitors you have to a site, the more people will click on the ads you show.  Additionally, you can place search bars on your site and allow your visitors to search the web without having to leave your site.  You also make money from Google when they search from your site and click on an advertiser.

So, with a brief introduction to what AdSense is, let’s talk about making it work for you.  You can put ads anywhere you want on your site, but you don’t want to encumber the functionality of your web page by doing so.  The trick is placing your ads in areas of your site that will generate the highest click through percentage.  If you get 1,000 visitors a day, and increase your click through ratio by only 1%, you’re talking about 300 extra clicks per month.

So where should you place your ads to give you the biggest bang for the buck?  Well, the good folks over at Google have created heat maps to answer just that question.  Google is the king of online advertising, if they are going to give you advice, shouldn’t you listen?  Check out these heat maps and put them to good use.  They have a heat map for a typical website here, plus they have a heat map for a typical blog site here

Other suggestions that they make is to try and blend your ads with your site’s color scheme as much as possible.  They add that wider ads tend to perform better, and suggest putting ads at the end of content.  This is to give your visitors the opportunity to finish reading, and present them with some targeted options of new places to go next.

Take a look at the tips Google gives for AdSense, they really have a lot of great advice, and it works!  Try arranging your ads, keep track of what works and what does not.  Just small changes could have a large impact.
