If you are going to make money online, you are going to need traffic to your website.  There are many ways to do this, one of which is to optimize your site so that it shows up in the search engines.  There are many steps in doing this.  One of the more important steps is building incoming links.Links from other sites increase your credibility for search engines such as Google.  The more quality links you have, the more they are going to help you out.  Not only is it the actual links that you want, but you want them to be anchored by text relating to your website.  For example, if your website is about making money online, having a link anchored by text about making money online is going to carry more weight than a simple link with no text.Another aspect of links is that the more page rank the site linking to you has, the more that link is going to be worth.  The reasoning behind this is that if a site is well trusted, well liked and has been around for a long period of time, they are going to link to other sites that are worth visiting.  Good anchored text links from high PR sites are like gold.

There are a few ways to get links.  One way is through reciprocal linking.  You put a link on your page, they put a link on theirs.  This is pretty common, and can help both parties out, especially if you can get some text about your site with your link on the other page.  There are a number of directories out there which will link to you for a reciprocal link in exchange.  You can also browse the web and offer a reciprocal link exchange with other sites.  If you have a new site, this may be a bit tough at first, but as you gain exposure and page ranking, it will become easier.  Once you get some PR behind you, you will find others approaching you for link exchanges.

Another way to get links is to simply submit to online directories.  There are a number of them out there, some paid, some free.  Many of them will allow you to add text with your link.  An added benefit is the traffic you will obtain from these listings.  If you are going to pay for a listing, don’t pay just for the link.  Look into the directory and see that it has the potential to send business your way.

To get you going, here are a few free directories that you can submit your site to:

dmoz.org - Everyone should submit their site here.  It may take some time to be added, or you may not be added at all, but it is a very established directory with great page rank.

jayde.com - Try to find a category that is not too crowded, you may get some traffic from this site.  They are pretty quick to add sites, and have pretty good page ranking.

somuch.com - Pretty easy submission, decent page rank, worth submitting here.

netinsert.com - Pretty good page rank, they ask you to add a link to your site in return, worth checking them out.

DirectoryMaximizer - pay for inclusion, cost is only 14 cents per submission, pretty good service!

These should give you a bit of a start, search around on Google, it’s not hard to find sites willing to link to you, you just need to spend a bit of time.  Since we are talking about links here, please feel free to link to me if you enjoyed this article.  Also feel free to contribute any additional free directories that I have left out here.  Check back in, I will be compiling a lengthy list of link directories, both paid and free here in the near future.
